2002 - 2003The Language Project: Trinity Diploma in TESOL
This ten week training course involved both teaching practice and a huge amount of reading. Topics covered included "Phonology", "Language Analysis", "The Four Skills", "Syllabus Design", "World English" and "Discourse".
2002UK-IT Training: CIW Course
Attaining this certification involved both practical training on site and home-based study for the CIW series of three computer assessed exams in "Internet Foundations", "Site Design" and "E-commerce".
2001UK-IT Training: ECDL Course
Successfully passed this internationally recognized series of 7 exams including Windows OS, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, E-mail and Internet.
2001VST Webmaster Course.
Successfully completed this nationally recognized home-study course. Assessment was based on a mock website I constructed for a fictional company. Grade awarded: Distinction.
1991Bell School Cambridge: RSA English teaching certificate.
Course involved both theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign language to adults. Attained a Grade B pass.
1990Tunbridge Wells Red Cross Centre: First Aid Course
Learned both theory and practice of providing First Aid.
1980 - 1983University of Sussex: BSc Honours in Physics
Course involved a large practical element and a brief introduction to computing using the "Apple 2".
1978 - 1980Hurstpierpoint College Sussex: A-levels
Obtained A-level passes in three subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Work History In Greece and Japan

1999 - 2001NK Management Center, Fukuyama, Japan
I worked as an English instructor responsible for in-house language and business training of employees of NKK, a large steel manufacturer. Duties also included some proofreading of technical documents and the planning and teaching of tailor-made intensive training courses.
1997 - 1999Britannica English Village, Matsuyama, Japan
I worked as an English teacher and was responsible for preparing and teaching conversation classes to adult groups. Work also included producing supplementary written teaching materials and introducing students to the use of e-mail and the World Wide Web.
1996 - 1997Kensington English School, Gifu-City, Japan
I worked as an English instructor, teaching both children's and adult classes. I was expected to produce my own written and recorded materials to supplement material from textbooks.
1995 - 1996Z and G Zacharopoulos ELT Publications, Athens, Greece
Co-wrote, recorded and mixed original listening practice test cassettes for Cambridge First Certificate exam. Over 10,000 copies have been sold of the book itself (Are You Listening?).

I shared responsibility for teaching and testing intermediate and advanced classes of teenagers in intensive training for the Cambridge "First Certificate" and "Proficiency" exams.

My first teaching job, in a relatively remote part of Greece, where I was the first native English teacher to hold the post. Work required a lot of improvization and writing of supplementary teaching material.
 

Work History In The United Kingdom

I worked as a "night porter", which as well as "carrying things", also involved some room service, bar work, cleaning, preparing of light meals, reception duties, conference and banquet preparations and more besides.
1988 - 1989Street Musician; various locations
I played accordion (and sometimes sang and danced) in high streets all over Britain and Europe, earning enough to sustain myself for almost a year.

Other Achievements and Interests

I attended weekly classes for two years and learned enough to handle basic general conversation and write and read simple text.

French
I studied for seven years at school and can still cope with basic conversation.
Cycling Toured various areas of Greece including Pelion, Evioa and Crete. While in Japan I cycled (and walked) to the top of Mt. Fuji and explored the smaller mountains around Matsuyama and Fukuyama where I was living.
Painting While in Greece, I painted and sold signs (and did some other design work) for restaurants, bars and hotels. I also painted scenery for (and appeared in) English-teaching theatrical productions. To see photos of some of them, click here.
